SCCHE Learning Center

The St. Charles County Christian Home Educators (SCCHE) will again be offering the Learning Center courses on Tuesdays.  The Spring 2009-2010 semester’s classes will run for 16 weeks and will be held on Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. – 3:55 p.m. at First Baptist Church of St. Peters, 3533 Mid Rivers Mall Drive, St. Peters,  MO  63376.  The semester will run January 5, 2010 through May 4, 2010.

Instructors for all courses are Christians and have agreed to the St. Charles Christian Home Educators’ Statement of Faith.  While the course content of each class is determined by the instructor, each instructor is instructed to not use any materials or lessons that could be considered objectionable to SCCHE families.  Although actual classroom time is only on Tuesdays, instructors usually give assignments to be done in the homeschool setting through the rest of the week.

Class size and cost:  The classes hold approximately 12-18 students (instructors may choose to limit classes to fewer students at their discretion).  The cost for each one hour class is $75.00 per semester, per student (which is less than $5 per hour of instruction.)   Costs for shorter courses and for classes that meet for more than one hour per week are listed at the bottom of this page.  Instructors may have an additional supplies cost for their courses which will be listed within the description of each course.  Check out descriptions of each course for details.

Cost for courses:
  • $100 per student for a one semester course that covers 24 hours of class time.  These classes are typically held a once per week for one and a half hours per week.
  • $75 per student for a one semester course that covers 16 hours of class time.  These classes are typically held once a week for one hour per week.  They can also be 8 week classes held for two hours a week or 4 week classes held for four hours a week.

Tuition must be paid directly to the instructor by the student on the first day of class.  Additional fees listed are due with registration.  Please pay all tuition and additional fees by check, made out directly to the instructor.

Registration Fee:  A non-refundable $25 registration fee for the first course per family and $8 for each additional course should accompany the registration form. After December 15, registration is $33  for the first course per family and $13 per additional course. There is a maximum registration fee of $65 per family ($75 for registrations mailed after December 15).

Purpose of the SCCHE Learning Center

The Learning Center is designed to help homeschoolers in the following ways:

  1. To provide supplemental classes in a Christ centered environment.
  2. To provide classes with outside accountability for students.
  3. To provide assistance in those classes which are more difficult to teach (higher math and sciences, composition, etc).
  4. For those students in choir and band, to allow an opportunity for classes before choir and band, thus reducing the amount of days out of the home (and, for some of us less organized folks, to allow for something to get done on Tuesday mornings!!)
  5. To provide assistance with classes in an effort to help homeschoolers continue to homeschool through high school, rather than putting their children in public school.
  6. To provide assistance and supplemental, fun classes for moms of elementary and junior high aged children.

INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS
  • Instructors teaching science classes must teach them from a literal six-day creation point of view.

  • Instructors are not required to hold a degree in the subject area being taught, but should have a firm knowledge of that subject area

  • We would like for instructors to have a child protection form on file with the church.  We will provide more details on this policy and how this is to be done.  If you have a current child protection policy in place with your church, please let Phebe know.

  • Instructors should have a love for children and a desire to teach them and help them grow

  • Instructors must agree with the SCCHE Statement of Faith.  That statement, in its entirety, is here: SCCHE Faith Statement.

Susie Lyon has been happily married to her husband, Terry, for 22 years. They have two children Jessica (13) and Nathan (12), a Golden Retriever named Ginger, a cat named Oreo, and two fish--Alex and Bubbles.  They live in St. Peters and have been members of Liberty Christian Church since the church began in 1995.  Jobs at Liberty have included Meal Ministry Coordinator, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Drama Team, Liberty Productions.  This past December she was The Ghost of Christmas Past in Liberty Productions A Christmas Carol.  Mme Lyon enjoys fitness, reading, travel, and studying French.

Mme Lyon's mother's family is French.  Since childhood, she has loved anything and everything about France and anything French--truly a Francophile in every sense.  She loves sharing her enhusiasm, heritage and knowledge of French with  students and has been tremendously blessed to have the opportunity to teach the past five years at Willot Road Christian Academy.  Her experience at WRCA has been elementary and middle school.  Recently, she had the opportunity to teach high school level French for the first semester, substitute teaching at Liberty Classical School this past fall.

Top 5 Reasons to Study French

1.  French is the first or second language in over 50 countires and spoken by over 100 million people around the world.  Think about the missionary possibilities.
2.  After English, French is the second language on the internet.
3.  France is the #1 visited country in the world.
4.  Over 1/3 of all English words are derived from French (Thanks to William the Conqueror).  Learning French will help your English vocabulary and help increase SAT/ACT scores.
5.  France is a technically advanced country and a world leader in aero-space technology, high-speed transportation, medical research, art, literature, fashion, gourmet cuisine and diplomatic languages.  French is also one of five official languages of the United Nations and one of the two main languages of the European Union and Olympics.  If you are considering a career in any of these fields knowing French is highly encouraged.

LITERATURE

Carleen Mathiesen is the mother of 5 sons.  She homeschooled her youngest 2 children from 1994-2009 and has taught literature courses in a homeschool co-op for 6 years.  She has a bachelor's degree in English, and as a committed "life-long learner" has  attended numerous college classes on a variety of subjects since graduating.

Lit 1 – American Literature for High School with Carleen Mathiesen  12:00-12:55

American Literature, which covers two semesters, is designed for motivated 9th to 12th grade students.  Significant amounts of reading will be required including the following novels/books: The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Daisy Miller by Henry James, Up from Slavery by Booker T. Washington, The Virginian by Owen Wister, Our Town by Thornton Wilder, and an American novel of student's choosing (with parent and teacher approval), for which a 10 minutes oral book report will be given.  The course will also cover essays, short stories and poetry.  We will be studying American literature in regard to its relationship to American History.  2-3 pages of written work will be assigned every week.  Parents are always welcome to sit in on any class.  A $15 copy fee* covers all of the works we will be studying (excepting the novels).

Although this class is designed for the student to take both semesters, it is being opened up for students to join it at the beginning of the second semester.  Students joining the class will need to pay the $15 copy fee for the comb-bound book that has all the shorter works/poetry in it.  Students continuing from first semester do not need to pay the fee a second time.

Lit 2 – Intro to Literature for 7th-9th grades with Carleen Mathiesen  1:00-1:55

Emphasis in Introduction to Literature is placed on bolstering READING COMPREHENSION as vital in the study of all other subjects.  We will be reading several children's classic novels, as well as short stories, essays and poetry and one drama (Julius Caesar).  Covering 2 semesters, the novels we will be reading are: Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, The Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter and Shane by Jack Schaeffer.  Many, if not most, "conventional" schools are turning away from classic novels in favor of contemporary fare that has not stood the test of time.  In turn, the decline of Western civilization is thus being helped along its present unfortunate path.
There will be a quiz every week and a limited amount of written homework.  Course is best suited for 7th to 9th grade students.

MATH

Kathy Cumbie graduated in 1987 with a degree in secondary  math education and was one course shy of science certification.  She then taught public high school for 5 years where she also coached swimming, diving, and cheerleading.  Since then, she has been homeschooling her 3 children, tutoring, teaching at the Learning Center, and coaching swimming.  Kathy's goals include becoming as computer savvy as her children and binge able to use a graphing calculator well.

Math 1
– Algebra 1 with Kathy Cumbie. 10:00 – 10:55.

Required Textbook: Saxon Algebra 1 text (3rd edition).

Algebra 1 is designed as a two semester course covering algebra 1. Through the complete course of study the student will learn operations with integers, exponents, solving equations, two equations with two unknowns, graphing, ratio, percent, unit conversions, geometry (an inclusive approach) and many other types of problems. In order to take this class a student must already be proficient in arithmetic skills with fractions, decimals and whole numbers. We will be using the Saxon Algebra 1 text (3rd edition). Students must purchase this ahead of time. There is no reason to buy the answer key, test booklet, or solutions manual, unless desired. (Answers to the odd problems are in the back of the book.) Saxon also publishes a “DIVE” CD-ROM to accompany the curriculum. I would suggest this if you feel your student may need extra examples worked or to “rewind” the lessons in order to more fully understand. (Please note that class time will be devoted to covering 3-4 lessons at a time each week.) There will also be a “drop in” time scheduled weekly at the MK Branch (on highway K) of the St. Charles County Library available for students wanting help with their homework or parents that would like additional assistance instructor.  More information about the drop in resource will be available the first day of class.  Suggested source for purchase: Rainbow Resource at 1-888-841-3456.....#024419 Student text only or #000628 Homeschool kit (contains text, answer key and tests) or #SXDVA1 Algebra 1 text PLUS “DIVE” CD-ROM or #018098 “DIVE” CD-ROM only.

Math 2 - Algebra 2 with Kathy Cumbie 8:30 - 9:55

Required
Textbook: Algebra 2: A Fresh Approach available thru Rainbow Resource.

This year-long course will be 1 ˝ hours in length.  The course will cover equations, word problems, radicals, quadratics, graphs, functions, rational expressions, conics, logs, series/sequences, probability, and, if time permits, matrices and an introduction to trig.  The textbook is a “traditional approach” written by a math teacher.

Prerequisite: Algebra 1
Textbook: Algebra 2: A Fresh Approach available thru Rainbow Resource.  The text, hardbound, is $59.95 and it can be purchased as a softcover for $43.95.  A solutions manual for the even numbered problems is also available.  (The solutions for odd numbered problems are in the back of the student text.)

Math 3 - Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus with Kathy Cumbie 11:00 - 12:25

Required
Textbook: Math U See Precalculus

This year-long course will be 1 ˝ hours in length.  The course will cover trig functions, trig identities, radians, polar equations, vectors, composite functions, logarithms, graphing functions, series and sequences, limits, and if time permits, max/min and first derivative.  The text follows a “traditional approach”.

Prerequisite: Algebra 2 and a good understanding of right triangles (from geometry)
Textbook: Math U See Precalculus available at www.mathusee.com.  The student kit costs $20 and a teacher pack is available (but not necessary....that is my job) for $70, which includes solutions, teacher manual, and a DVD.

SCIENCE

BioA – Biology for High Schoolers with Margaret Porch 8:30 - 9:55

BioB – Biology for High Schoolers with Margaret Porch 1:00 - 2:25

BioC – Biology for High Schoolers with Margaret Porch 2:30 - 3:55

Required Textbook: Apologia's Exploring Creation with Biology, 2nd edition, by Dr. Jay Wile - student text and solutions and tests manual. Recommended supplement: CD companion to the book.

Margaret Porch has a bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy, has taught the SCCHE biology dissection labs for the past eight years, and taught High School Biology at the Learning Center for the past two years.  Although she does not have a biology degree, per se, she has a strong background in science and loves biology.  She has also done a lot of independent study on creation versus evolution (to include materials from Answers in Genesis and other biblical creation resources) and holds to a literal 6-day Biblical creation world view.  Margaret has four children, three of whom she has homeschooled through high school and who are now in college and a fourth who is finishing her 10th grade year.

Course description: High School Biology is a two-semester high school biology class with a full lab, including dissection and microscopic analysis. This course is for students in 9th-12th grades.  Text used is Apologia's "Exploring Creation with Biology," Second Edition, by Dr. Jay Wile. Students will be given a syllabus laying out weekly reading and study guide assignments. Quizzes and review over reading assignments will be given each week, but class time will focus on labs that correlate with the lessons learned during the week. Students are expected to complete chapter study guides and module summaries at home, grade them, and turn them in.  Students are also expected to take chapter and quarterly tests at home and grade them, correcting incorrect answers and turning in the completed, graded tests. In addition, students will be asked to complete a "year project" which involves specific assignments that focus on origins as seen from a literal, six-day creation point-of-view.  Students will also be given a syllabus on the first day of class and will be expected to follow it. Goals of this class include:
  • Students will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of biology at a high school level,
  • Students will be provided with the full experience of a high school biology lab,
  • Students will gain a strong understanding of a literal six-day creation point-of-view and will be able to contrast that to the evolution world view taught in most secular textbooks, thus solidifying their world view on creation versus evolution.
  • Students will get exposure to, and be able to learn from, a syllabus-structured class, thus preparing them for college classes either at the dual-enrollment level, or after graduating from high school.
The class will meet for 90 minutes to allow adequate time for labs. Text required: Apologia's "Exploring Creation with Biology," Second Ed. Recommended supplement: CD companion to the book. Nine copies of the complete CD version of this text (not the supplement) are available to rent for $15 for the year (First come, first serve) from Margaret. Lab notebook, all study guides, and all module summaries will be provided. Tuition for a 90 minute class is $100 per semester. In addition to tuition, a $25 lab fee per student per semester is required to cover lab supplies and the printing of the lab book, study guides, and module summaries. Signing up for this course is a year commitment to the course (although you will need to register again second semester).

Creation Science is designed as a full year (two-semester) look at Evolution Versus Creation using three books:  Geology Book by Dr. John Morris, Fossil Book by Gary and Mary Parker (both published by Master Books)  and Evolution: The Grand Experiment by Dr. Carl Werner, published by New Leaf Press (www.newleafpress.net).  The Geology and Fossil books introduce the student to the wonders of geological study and provide a strong foundation in understanding paleontology from a Six day creation point of view.  Dr. Werner's book is colorful and inviting to students to read and study.  Students learn about the theory of evolution, and are presented with new discoveries being made in science which have undermined previously accepted evidence supporting evolution.   Students will be given a workbook with weekly thought provoking questions on each chapter to do at home.    Discussion of concepts learned will occur in the classroom, often in the form of a Jeopardy" game created with questions and answers from the previous week's study or with "stump the teacher" as students try to find questions from their reading that the teacher cannot answer.  Students will be given a study guide for the semester on the first day of class in each semester. This is a year long class and requires a year commitment.
This is a 60 minute class so cost of the class is $75 per semester plus an additional $10 fee per semester for copies and supplies.

Required textbooks:  The Geology Book by Dr. John D. Morris (Master books isbn 0-89051-281-7), The Fossil Book by Gary and Mary Parker (Master Books  isbn 0-89051-438-0), and  Evolution: The Grand Experiment by Dr. Carl Warner (New Leaf Press  isbn. 0-89221-681-6).
Margaret Porch has a few copies of the Geology and Fossil book that she got for $8.00 each plus shipping (the books retail for $16.00).  If you are interested in obtaining one of those copies, please contact Margaret via email (frontporch80@gmail.com).  Check out Library and Educational Services (www.libanded.com) or New Leaf Press for the best prices on all three of these books.

Mary Watkins attended Mizzou and has a bachelor's degree in Nursing. She has five children and has been homeschooling for 10 years.  As of the fall of 2009, she will have two children in college. Science and math are her favorite subjects. She has been tutoring chemistry this year using the Apologia chemistry book and would like to continue to help students understand chemistry.

SPECIAL NOTES:
  1. Lunch:  Lunch may be eaten only in the designated lunch area, and only by students signed up for study hall or accompanied by their parent. The designated lunch area is in the fellowship hall area (area used as waiting area for the choirs).  If you are eating lunch, you will need to stay at the lunch table while eating and clean up after yourself. On the second Tuesdays, lunch will be in the designated study hall room.
  2. Food and Drink:  No food and drink anywhere in the building except for in the specified dining area in the study hall.  The only exception to this policy is if a student wants to bring bottled water to class.
  3. Study Hall:  Students are not allowed to be “hanging around” between classes.  Students who have an hour between classes must sign up for Study Hall, or must be with their parents.  Phebe Martin is in charge of the Study Hall.  There is a charge of $10 per student per course hour (per semester) payable to Phebe, for being in study hall.  If you are planning on having your child in the study hall, you will need to register him or her for that.  Students with more than one hour of free time between classes must be with a parent.  Study hall is reserved for students with only an hour between classes.
  4. Dress Code:  The dress code for the Learning Center will be the same one that is used by the SCCHE choirs.  We will provide you with a copy of that on the first day of class.  Repeated violation of the dress code (4 or more times) may result in your child being asked to not participate in any further activities.
  5. Behavior:  A complete list of rules and regulations is available here.  Most homeschooled children understand what proper behavior is. If a student chooses to ignore or disobey the rules, the parent will be called to come and pick up the child.  Persistant improper behavior may result in your child not being able to participate in the Learning Center.
  6. Church facility:  Students are to enter the church from the back parking lot, entering through the double metal doors by the air conditioners.  They are then to go up the stairs that are right inside the door and report to their classrooms (all located on the second floor).  Students should remain on the second floor.  There are bathrooms and a drinking fountain on the second floor.  Parents should come inside the church to pick up their children after class.  Students will not be permitted to wait outside.
  7. Monitor Parents are asked to volunteer to help monitor the Study Hall, lunch area, or Learning Center doors once during the semester.
